![]() ![]() Contact the Stormwater Specialist with questions about illicit discharges and reporting stormwater pollution! |
Although your local waterway may have a pollution source that’s obvious to you, Suffolk County may not know about it, so please report it! One of the largest sources of nonpoint source pollution is the illegal discharge of pollutants to stormwater conveyance systems. Any discharge to these systems other than stormwater is considered “illicit.” The term illicit is used because the stormwater conveyance system is not designed to treat this pollution. Pollutants that enter the conveyance system are discharged directly to oceans and bays. Illicit discharges can happen directly or indirectly and may or may not be intentional. Some examples include illegal septic system connections or the intentional dumping of wastes down drains. If you witness something suspect coming out of a stormwater outfall to a body of water or any type of suspect connection, please report it to the appropriate person at the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. See tips on identifying illicit discharges under the general information tab. For any discharge to surface waters contact, Robert M. Waters, Office of Ecology: 631-852-5760 For discharges of toxic or hazardous materials from commercial or industrial properties, contact: Office of Pollution Control: 631-854-2501 |
