What is Aggressive Driving?

Aggressive driving is the combination of unsafe and unlawful driving actions that demonstrate a disregard for safety.

Across America and throughout Suffolk County, people seem to be taking out their aggressions on the road, dodging and weaving, speeding, passing on the shoulder and tailgating. On a national level, aggressive driving violations are at an unacceptable level. This problem is apparent on the roadways in Suffolk County.

The Police Department has a number of programs designed to combat aggressive driving. Some of these programs target a specific driving behavior or perhaps a period of the calendar year, such as the start of school or the holiday season. Frequently citizens ask how they can get involved or report an aggressive driver.

In response, the Suffolk County Police Department has developed:

R.O.A.D. Safety Program

The R.O.A.D. (Registered Owner Awareness and Decision) Safety Program is designed to enlist the support of citizens to educate aggressive drivers. The first step is for a concerned citizen to notify the Suffolk County Police Department about an incident involving aggressive driving via an online form found on the Police Department's web site. In order to use the online form, a citizen must have a valid New York State driver license ID number, which must be entered on the form. If you do not have a valid New York State driver license ID number, you can report the incident by calling 852-COPS. Once the information from the online form has been received, the Police Department will send the REGISTERED OWNER of the vehicle a letter detailing the complaint made as well as the dangers of aggressive driving. This is the AWARENESS part of the program. The registered owner must then make a DECISION about what action to take to be a safer driver or to ensure the person who was using the vehicle at the time drives more responsibly.

At no time will your New York State driver license ID number be revealed to anyone!

Public education and awareness are important factors in stopping aggressive driving and the unnecessary risks to other motorists. With help from the community, through programs such as the R.O.A.D. Safety Program, we can make a greater impact.
