Tragedy Averted: D.W.I. Minivan Wrong Way on Sunrise

At approximately 5:00 a.m. today, Deputy Sheriff Vincent Aparicio arrested Manuel Mendez, d.o.b. 5/31/74, of Hackensack, New Jersey, following a 911 call reporting a minivan traveling at a high rate of speed westbound in the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway, preventing a tragic outcome.

Mendez, operating a 1998 Dodge Caravan, was spotted by a motorist near Nichols Road on Sunrise Highway headed west in the eastbound lanes.  Deputy Sheriff Aparicio intercepted the Dodge near Oakdale/Bohemia Road and stopped Mendez without futher incident.  Mendez was arrested at the scene, charged with D.W.I. and Operating Without a License.  Intoxilyzer results on processing were .16, twice the legal limit for D.W.I.  Mendez will be arraigned this afternoon at First District Court in Central Islip.

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco stated, “Deputy Sheriff Aparicio’s swift response ended this driver’s reckless actions, which otherwise would have most certainly resulted in a tragic outcome.”
