HIV Commission

The Suffolk County HIV Commission was formed to make a difference in the lives of those individuals with AIDS and those infected with the HIV virus. Nassau and Suffolk Counties have the highest suburban HIV infected populations and Long Island has more cumulative AIDS cases than 26 states in the United States. There are 3,712 cumulative AIDS cases in Suffolk County alone disproportionately impacting the Black and Hispanic Communities in the Long Island Region. The Commission has made many initivies in moving forward to better protect the residents of Suffolk County from the spread of HIV and AIDS. The Commission’s strategy is “Push, Pull and Support.” That is, to push information out to the public, pull the public in for education and testing and support agency and community programs. The Commission is working with educators to update curriculum, supporting county-wide educational programs, publicizing prevention and testing messages. The collaborative efforts of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, community groups and doctors have made this commission a success in exploring additional opportunities to protect our residents.
