Under direction, an employee in this class performs work involving the responsibility for managing all phases of the operation and maintenance activities of Suffolk County’s Gabreski Airport, including the general direction of all air traffic, enforcement of rules and regulations, oversight of budget preparation and the supervision of public relations activities. Work is performed under the direction of the Commissioner of Economic Development and requires the exercise of independent judgment in planning and policies and regulations. Supervision is exercised over the activities of technical, service and clerical employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Directs and co-ordinates all Gabreski Airport operations in order to ensure compliance with federal, state and local rules and regulations;
Plans and supervises the proper
storage of planes and adequate protection of airport properties;
Plans and directs the control of air
and ground traffic to ensure the safe and efficient operation of planes;
Plans and directs the maintenance
and repair of hangars, auxiliary buildings, runways, roads and other
construction work at the airport;
Performs zoning, development and
related research studies;
Makes recommendations for
improvement of the airport and its facilities;
Inspects all buildings, runways and
related facilities for fire and safety hazards and directs needed repairs and
authorizations;
Contacts business and civic
organizations, newspaper and radio sources and otherwise publicizes the
activities of the airport and promotes the use of its facilities;
Prepares news releases; addresses
civic groups and otherwise carries out the public relations program for the
airport;
Supervises the preparation and
maintenance of all account keeping, cost analysis, inventory and related
business management records and reports;
Prepares and oversees Operating
and Capital Program budgets;
Supervises the maintenance and distribution
of accurate and up-to-date information concerning the weather, nearby
associated facilities and other data affecting air traffic.
Good knowledge of federal, state and local rules and regulations applicable to airport traffic control and airport management; good knowledge of airport maintenance and construction work and of the supplies, materials and equipment used in such work; good knowledge of standard record keeping practices as related to airport operations; some knowledge of effective supervisor techniques; some knowledge of airport maintenance problems, procedures and techniques; ability to plan, assign and direct the work of a large staff of employees performing diversified maintenance and operational functions in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with persons using the airport and operating its concessions; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a New York State or Regionally
accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Aviation
Management, and six (6) years of responsible airport operations experience, two
(2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent
competitive status as an Assistant Airport Manager or Assistant Airport
Supervisor.
