FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class is responsible for performing aircraft rescue and fire fighting
duties at an airport. Responsibility is
also included for routine maintenance and custodial work on equipment and for
periodic inspection of facilities.
Although work is performed under general supervision within established
rules and safety regulations, the incumbent is expected to exercise independent
initiative and judgment in reacting to emergency situations. Detailed instructions are received from a
superior and custodial and maintenance duties are inspected upon
completion. Performs related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Responds to aircraft emergencies to
prevent or extinguish fires and rescue plane passengers;
Drives fire fighting equipment to
the scene of the emergency or end of runway surface, participates in the use of
fog and chemical agents to cover the aircraft and the use of appropriate
equipment to gain entry to damaged aircraft;
Maintains fire lines to prevent
unauthorized persons from entering a crash or emergency area;
Performs general maintenance on
emergency vehicles, fire protection pump station and water system, fire alarms
and detectors, pipe hose and portable extinguishers, refueling vehicles and
fuel storage facilities;
Provides stand-by fire protection,
foams over or dissipates runways with water in cases of fuel spills, engine
run-ups or refueling and defueling of aircraft in hazardous conditions;
Participates in snow removal
operations as required;
Administers first aid when
necessary.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of modern fire fighting and prevention techniques; thorough knowledge
of operating and maintenance techniques of airport fire safety equipment and
vehicles; good knowledge of the sources of fire hazards involving aircraft and
airport facilities; good knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing
fire safety, fire fighting and rescue at an airport; good knowledge of the
application of emergency first-aid methods and techniques; skill in the use of
emergency fire fighting vehicles and equipment; ability to use good judgment in
fire fighting and fire prevention, and to act quickly and calmly in
emergencies; ability to take, understand and carry out complex oral and written
instruction; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from
a standard senior high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, and either:
(a) Three (3) years of paid full-time
experience in fire fighting and/or fire prevention work in a fire department;
or,
(b) Three (3) years of experience
in the military assigned to an Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Unit; or,
(c) Four (4) years of experience in
fire fighting and/or fire prevention work as a member in good standing of a
volunteer fire company duly organized under the laws of New York; or,
(d) Satisfactory equivalent combination
of the above experience.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years
as a permanent Maintenance Mechanic I, II, or III performing aircraft rescue
and fire fighting duties.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of
appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess the following:
a) Current NYS Emergency Medical Technician
Certificate – Basic. Employees must
maintain this certification throughout employment in this position;
b) Hazardous
Material Operations Certificate. Employees must maintain this certification
throughout employment in this position;
c) Completion of
Firefighter I and Firefighter II Courses;
a) Completion of
one FAA “Hot Drill”.
Within six (6)
months of employment, employees must attain the following:
(a)
Valid New York State Driver’s license, Class B (Municipal Vehicles). Employees
must maintain such license throughout employment in this title.
