ASPHALT WORKER II 7010
An employee in this class is a member of a crew performing tasks in the
field of asphalt application in highway maintenance and paving of town
roads. Work differs from that performed by an Asphalt Worker
I in that the incumbent requires training and experience in utilizing the screw
mechanism on the control panel of the asphalt paver. Work requires independent judgment, but is subject to inspection
in progress. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Determines
amount of asphalt released from asphalt paver by utilizing the screw mechanism;
Makes
appropriate adjustments to rate of flow and area of coverage while observing
the control panel and the flow of asphalt;
May
be required to perform fine or finished work by leveling asphalt by hand;
May
operate light motor vehicles, such as light trucks;
May
use asphalt rake when first laying asphalt for rough grading;
May
use leute (finishing) asphalt rake for fine grading of asphalt;
Picks
up brush and leaves and/or plows snow, when weather prohibits paving;
May
use various light equipment in the off-season for the purposes of snow removal.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES,
SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of tools and
equipment used in asphalt paving; good knowledge of the occupational hazards
and safety precautions of the work; ability to understand and
follow oral or written instructions; ability to develop skill in the use and
care of the tools, materials and equipment; ability to regulate asphalt flow
and coverage in order to produce a surface ready for finishing; skill in
gauging asphalt coverage through visual observation; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
(a) Three (3) years of
experience in semi-skilled asphalt work including raking asphalt in the preparation
for the final setting of the road; or,
(b) Two (2) years of
experience as an Asphalt Worker I.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Depending upon the nature of the
assignment, at the time of appointment, and during employment in this title,
employees may be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle
in New York State, or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the
transportation requirements of the job.
