DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs basic specialized
tasks in the field of asphalt application in highway maintenance and paving of
town roads. Work involves the use of tools and equipment commonly
used in asphalt paving. The incumbent
requires a higher level of skill than do laborers, in that employees in this
title are responsible for more precise smoothing of road surfaces in
preparation for finishing. Work is
usually performed as part of a paving crew and is subject to inspection in
progress. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Uses asphalt rake when
first laying asphalt for rough grading;
Smoothes out large
sections of freshly paved roads by raking surface smooth in preparation for
final setting by a heavy roller;
Uses leute (finishing)
asphalt rake for fine grading of asphalt;
May shovel asphalt into
hopper of paving machine;
May perform rough,
preliminary finishing with rake to smooth out asphalt spill;
May operate light motor
vehicles, such as small trucks;
Picks
up brush and leaves and/or plows snow, when weather prohibits paving;
May operate various light
equipment used in the off-season for the purposes of snow removal.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of tools, equipment and procedures used in asphalt
paving; ability to use hand tools used in asphalt paving; ability
to understand and follow oral or written instructions; ability to develop skill
in the operation of hand tools; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One (1) year of experience as a laborer working in an
asphalt crew.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Depending upon the nature of the assignment, at the time of appointment,
and during employment in this title, employees may be required to possess a
valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State, or otherwise
demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation requirements of the job.
