CLERK OF THE WORKS 1051
An employee in this class acts as resident inspector of buildings being
constructed, altered or repaired by contract forces. Work emphasis is on
gaining compliance with legal requirements and prescribed specifications. The incumbent ordinarily works alone and is
expected to make independent decisions requiring technical discretion and
judgment. Work is subject to review by
professional engineering personnel through oral and written reports and by
inspection. Does related work as
required.
Inspects buildings in the
course of construction, alteration and repair;
Confers with contractors
and insures that New York State and Suffolk County standards and specifications
are being adhered to;
Checks materials and
arranges for laboratory tests;
Makes written reports to
supervisor as to progress on a percentage of completion basis;
Inspects heating,
plumbing and ventilating installation for compliance with specifications;
Keeps an accurate daily
log of the work done and the equipment used by each contractor;
Provides written and oral
reports of inspection results.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and equipment common to building construction; good knowledge of New York State and Suffolk County codes and regulations governing building construction; ability to read and interpret a variety of blueprints, plans and specifications applicable to building construction; ability to make skilled technical inspections and to enforce regulations firmly, technically and impartially; ability to keep records
and prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands
of the position.
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and six (6) years of experience in building construction work, two (2) of which
must have been in the inspection or supervision of more than one (1) of the
construction trades.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of
permanent competitive status as an Assistant Clerk of the Works.
NOTES:
Additional education in
civil technology, construction technology, engineering or a related field will
be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the experience in building
construction. Education will not
be substituted for experience in the inspection or supervision of construction
trades.
Additional experience in
building construction work will be substituted for education on a year-for-year
basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.
