DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an employee in this class learns to apply
accounting theory to an established accounting system. The methods to be used in assignments and
the area to be covered are well defined and the incumbents are expected to
develop their professional ability during the training period. After one (1) year of continuous service as
a permanent competitive Accountant Trainee within the municipality or
department, the incumbent in this title achieves permanent competitive status
as an Accountant. Work is reviewed for
adherence to accounting system procedures through review, conferences and
reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Records and summarizes
transactions and assists with analyzing, verifying and reporting the results;
Assists in establishing
new accounting procedures;
Assists in performing
cost accounting studies for the purpose of determining accurate unit costs of
departmental projects;
Assists in verifying that
all departmental operations are performed in accordance with local laws and
state laws;
Makes suggestions to
supervisors for solutions to accounting problems;
May participate in the
implementation and maintenance of computerized accounting systems.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of accounting principles and procedures and ability to
apply such knowledge to accounting transactions; some knowledge of office
methods and procedures and familiarity with the use of standard office
equipment; some knowledge of the general principles of public finance
administration, including budgeting and financial reporting; working knowledge
of electronic data processing as applied to accounting; ability to prepare
complete and accurate accounting reports and statements of some complexity;
ability to perform detailed work including written or numeric data and to make
arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately; ability to supervise a number
of account clerical and general clerical workers in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to follow complex oral and written
instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a New
York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree which includes, or is supplemented by, at least twenty-four (24) credits
in Accounting.
