JUVENILE SERVICES

ALTERNATIVES FOR YOUTH

The Suffolk County Probation Department has been involved in diversion efforts since 1987.  Diversion is the process by which the Probation Department attempts to keep status offenders, also known as "PINS" (Persons In Need of Supervision) out of family court by providing them with a range of services.  Historically, most of the cases opened at intake fell into one of two categories: School or Parent Pins.  However, the development of Alternatives for Youth, a new program which began accepting cases in October of 2005, provides parents with an alternative outside of the juvenile justice system.  This program is the first place that parents should call for help with children under the age of 18 who exhibit a pattern of incorrigible behaviors (runaways, curfew violations etc.) in the home.  Screening for this program can be accessed by telephoning the Probation Department Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at either 853-5281 or 853-7889.  If eligible, interested families are referred on to an agency that provides in-home services beginning within 24-48 hours.  A variety of services, including case management for up to one year, can be readily accessed through this program.

SCHOOL TRUANCY

Traditional diversion services continue to be provided by the Probation Department to children who are the subject of School PINS complaints.  However, only the school district can file this type of complaint as a result of truancy (subject to compulsory age attendance limitations) and issues of incorrigibility on school grounds.  Once opened at intake by a probation officer, a number of services such as educational advocacy, individual/family counseling and parent training can be recommended and provided, some at no cost to the family.  Supervision, including home and school visits, is provided by a probation officer and assigned by geographic area.
