SUFFOLK COUNTY CITIZEN CORPS COUNCIL
 The goal of the Citizen Corps Council is to see that every citizen of Suffolk county is ready to take an active role in preventing and responding to disaster - as private citizens prepared to care for our own families, or as volunteers trained to support the emergency first responders. Made up of civic leaders, citizen volunteers and representatives from emergency service, the Council works to create opportunities for meaningful volunteer service in such vital programs as the Community Emergency Response Team, Volunteers In Police Service, and the Medical Reserve Corps.
COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT)
 Have you ever witnessed the aftermath of an accident or act of violence and felt helpless because you lacked the skills needed to offer assistance? Promoted by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency management Agency (FEMA), the CERT Program will train you or your group in such things as disaster preparedness, fire safety and suppression, medical treatment, and disaster psychology. In 95% of all emergencies it is the bystanders or the victims themselves who must provide assistance or perform a rescue. CERT training means that others can depend on you when minutes are precious, that you're an important part of the community's emergency response capability.
VOLUNTEERS IN POLICE SERVICE (VIPS)
In any police department, uniformed officers perform scores of tasks that could be assisted or facilitated by citizen volunteers. Serving as an auxiliary police officer, providing assistance in:
1. Traffic control at special events, including parades, marathons and other large scale events.
2. Patrolling the community and reporting criminal or suspicious activity and other public safety concerns.
3. Assisting the regular police when requested at major incidents
are just a few of the ways you can help free up uniformed officers for expanded patrol duties. Whatever your particular skills might be, the Suffolk County VIPS Program can probably match them to an exciting volunteer assignment - as a part-time, or even full-time volunteer.

MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS (MRC)  If you're a practicing or retired physician, nurse, or other health professional, you can make a valuable contribution tot he public health needs of your community through participation in Suffolk County's Medical Reserve Corps. The MRC identifies and coordinates the county's medical resources in providing a variety of community health services - from assisting in immunizations, screenings and other non-emergency health programs, to responding to large-scale emergencies or disasters. In the latter case, the MRC is Suffolk County's focus for assuring that supplemental, life-saving skills are most efficiently employed during times of crisis.
