Chimney Sweep

Do You Need A Chimney Sweep?

The Office of Consumer Affairs requires that anyone working as a chimney sweep in Suffolk County must have an occupational license to do so. Before you contract with a chimney sweep, call our Office at (631) 853-4600 to inquire about the license status of the chimney sweep you are considering. We can tell you if there is a current license, when it expires, whether or not there are any open complaints and the recent complaint history of the company. If a company is licensed, you can be assured that there is a liability insurance policy in effect for that company and you will be covered under the County’s Restitution Fund (to a cap of $5,000) if the company goes out of business or otherwise loses its license prior to completing your work.

If you are planning to hire a chimney sweep, find out how long the company has been in business, ask for references, check the license status and ask if they are a member of a National Guild or are a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep. For more complete and detailed information about hiring chimney sweeps, why the need for chimney inspections exists and how your chimney system works, please go to the following link (Chimney Safety Institute of America):
